STOCKHOLM — Thousands of people protested against racism in a demonstration aimed at a far-right party that has entered the Swedish Parliament for the first time on Monday.

The demonstrators marched peacefully toward the parliament building.Similar but smaller protests were held in major cities across the Scandinavian country.

The far-right Sweden Democrats won 20 seats in the 349-member Parliament in a Sept. 19 election. The party demanded sharp cuts in immigration, and has called Islam the greatest foreign threat since World War II.

Lawmakers re-elected Per Westerberg as Parliament speaker on Monday, a day before Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt was set to present his new minority government.
