Over the past few days, the Haifa port has seen consistent growth in the number of ships coming into harbor, the Haifa Port Company said Monday.
"Business considerations and [concerns about] losses among shipping companies supersedes all other consideration, and over the past week we have seen persistent growth in the number of ships reaching the port, as well as the arrival of ships coming from Ashdod to Haifa after several days' wait," said company CEO Amos Uzani.
Last week 14 ships docked in Haifa, including seven container ships, the company said, adding that four ships were expected to arrive Monday and up to 20 by the end of the week.
Aside from the first two days of Katyusha attacks on Haifa, the port has been open throughout the crisis. Following consultation with the Homefront Command, it was decided to open the port to all ships besides those carrying hazardous materials, the company said.
The Ashdod Port Company said that 46 ships had been diverted from Haifa to Ashdod since the beginning of the crisis, in addition to 41 ships that were supposed to continue to Haifa but instead chose to unload their full charge in Ashdod.
"In our estimation, the vast majority of Israel's foreign trade currently passes through the port of Ashdod," said Ashdod Port Company chairman of the board Iris Stark.
The number of containers arriving at the Ashdod port between July 17 and 29 was 35 percent higher than the average volume of traffic during the first six months of the year, the company said, based on a calculation of annualized rates for the two periods.
Nonstop labor on the part of the port's workers has allowed the facility to handle the increase in operations without creating delays and successfully rise to the occasion as Israel's primary trade artery, the company said.
"We will continue with heightened activity as long as possible in order to maintain proper import and export activity in Israel even during these difficult days," said Ashdod Port Company CEO Shuki Sagis.
