A month after he was convicted of dealing arms and funding and organizing the Karine A cargo ship, the military court on Sunday sentenced Fuad Shubaki, a former aide to Yasser Arafat, to 20 years in jail and five years of suspended sentence. The court ruled that Shubaki's crimes deserve a severe punishment despite his deteriorating health and old age. Shubaki, now 70 years old, was head of finance for the Palestinian Authority security services when Israel Navy commandos stormed the Karine A cargo ship in the Red Sea and seized weapons being brought in from Iran. They included machine guns, rockets, mortars and explosives. All were banned from the Palestinian territories under interim peace deals with Israel. The PA initially denied involvement with the shipment and jailed Shubaki. Israeli troops captured him during a 2006 raid on a West Bank prison. The military prosecution had demanded that Shubaki receive a life sentence.
