National Guard to be under Israel Police, not national security minister - report

The National Guard which National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has promoted should be subject to the chief of police and not to the minister, a committee established to guide the formation of the guard has recommended, KAN reported on Monday. Ben-Gvir had demanded in the past that the new National Guard be subject to the minister's decisions, separate from the police.

The proposed National Guard will be based in the Border Police and will essentially serve as a larger and new version of the Border Police, according to the report. The committee also recommended that 40% of the new National Guard be made up of soldiers serving in mandatory service, although the IDF has expressed opposition to such a plan.
