Assad: Syria opposes direct talks with Israel, wants Turkey to mediate

Syrian President Bashar Assad, visiting Turkey, said on Wednesday that his country opposes direct negotiations with Israel, Israel Radio reported. In an interview a Turkish paper, Assad said that only after major progress is achieved in talks mediated by Turkey, will it be possible to hold direct meetings. The Syrian-Israeli talks held in the nineties failed because they did not focus on the details of a future peace agreement, Assad claimed.
