Aussie Israel Trail runner halted for a week

Australian ultra-marathoner Richard Bowles received word from a specialist that he would need to take a week off from his Israel Trail run on Sunday, to allow for the recovery of a foot infection, the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel reported on Monday.
Bowles, 34, had begun the 1,009-kilometer run on April 17, and had intended to complete the entire trail from Eilat to Kibbutz Dan in the span of 12 days. On Thursday, however, a foot infection began to cause him pain, and doctors at a Jerusalem hospital drained the infection. Bowles continued another 80 kilometers on Friday and almost reached Petah Tikvah, but the pain had become too unbearable at this point, SPNI said.
Last year, Bowles became the first person to run the world’s largest marked trail, a 5,330- kilometer route on Australia’s Bicentennial National Trail. Before that journey, he finished an 84-day, 3,054-kilometer run in December 2012 on Te Araroa: The Long Pathway in New Zealand.
Bowles intends to rest until next Sunday, after which he hopes to complete the Israel Trail in four more days, SPNI noted.
