Bill would permit Israelis to vote far from home

Israeli voters will be enabled to cast ballots in any polling station in Israel, as long as they inform the Population Registry of their intentions 74 days ahead of a general election, according to a bill that was passed in its first reading in the Knesset Law Committee Monday.

The director-general of the Central Election Committee, Orly Adas, said the bill would primarily help university and yeshiva students.

Zionist Union MK Yoel Hasson warned that the bill could be used to manipulate votes. In an effort to prevent that from happening, the head of the Law Committee, Bayit Yehudi MK Nisan Slomiansky, said any alternative voting address submitted could only be used for one election without being renewed.
