Central Bureau of Statistics: Unemployment rose to 8% in Q2 of '09

Unemployment rose to eight percent of the workforce in the second quarter of 2009, the Central Bureau of Statistics announced Thursday. Unemployment in the first quarter of the year stood at 7.6%, but the number of jobless then went up to 241,000. Despite the quarterly average, actual unemployment was down, after having reached an 8.4% peak in May. Last Wednesday, the Israel Employment Service revealed that in July, there was no rise in the number of people registered as unemployed compared to the previous month, marking the first time since May 2008 that unemployment had remained stable.
