Court: Only 1 million tons of Samar sands can be mined

The State mandated that no more than one million tons of sand be mined in the Samar sand dune, Adam Teva V'Din (Israel Union for Environmental Defense) announced on Sunday.
The district court ruling came in response to a Beersheba district court petition filed a few weeks ago by Tel AvivUniversity's Environmental Justice Clinic, representing Arava residents, inconjunction with environmental advocacy group Adam Teva V'Din.
“The struggle for the Samar sands achieved an unprecedented legal and environmental victory, in which the state obligates itself to leave behind most of the Samar sands, protected from the mining,” said Adam Teva V'Din executive director Amit Bracha.
