Court orders gov't to pay student arrested at demonstration

A student who was arrested while protesting Operation Cast Lead last year will receive nearly NIS 13,000 in compensation, after a Beersheba District Court ruling on Sunday.
The student, Ran Zoref, was arrested for participating in an illegal demonstration in January 2009 after police declared the gathering illegal.
In January of this year, the court ruled that his basic rights were violated when the protest was dispersed by police. The ruling said, "The infringement on the accused's freedom of expression is the most extreme violation that can be imagined in a democracy."
