Dichter says Yigal Amir deserved death penalty

Kadima MK Avi Dichter said Thursday that Yigal Amir should have been given the death penalty for assassinating former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, in an interview with Israel Radio.
Dichter's comments came in response to questions regarding tomorrow's expected release of Hagai Amir from jail. Hagai Amir, Yigal's brother, served sixteen and a half years for his involvement in Rabin's assassination and for threatening the life of former prime minister Ariel Sharon.
The Kadima MK also said that "there is an iron rule, anything that has happened once, can happen again," and that Israel's security services must maintain the utmost alertness in protecting public officials.
Dichter recounted that during the time of the Gaza pullout of 2005, the security services were aggressively monitoring a spike in possible assassination attempts against then prime minister Sharon.
