Fatah officials received rare permission from rival group Hamas to visit a number of prisons run by them and to meet Fatah detainees, AFP reported Tuesday.
In the first ever visit of any Fatah member, lawmaker Ashrad Jomaa toured several prisons, including Gaza Central prison, with the accompaniment of Hamas member Ismail al-Ashquar. Ashquar claims that Jomaa was allowed to meet with prisoners held on criminal and security charges and "ensure that none of them are on hunger strike."
Fatah and Hamas have passed accusations on the maltreatment of detainees in each others prisons. According to Ashqar, the visit was intended to "refute all the allegations and lies that are being spread by Fatah."
