Gulf of Mexico oil spill 'worst in US history'

Scientists examining the destroyed Deepwater Horizon oil well in the Gulf of Mexico that experienced a blowout on April 20, released new oil flow estimates on Thursday which place the disaster as the worst oil leak in US history, according to a Washington Post report.
Two teams of scientists using different estimation techniques reached a preliminary figure of between 17 and 39 million gallons of oil spilled in the disaster, larger than the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989, which disbursed 11 million gallons of oil into the Pacific Ocean.
