Jordan's PM urges opposition to contest polls

AMMAN, Jordan— Jordan's prime minister urged the country's largest opposition party Saturday to reverse its decision to boycott upcoming parliamentary elections, an election official said.

The Muslim Brotherhood Movement announced last month it would stay away from the polls to protest a new law that it says will significantly undermine the group's robust showing in past elections.

The legislation, passed in May, reduced the number of seats for lawmakers elected from urban areas, where the Brotherhood holds sway, and increased those from rural regions dominated by pro-government Bedouin tribes.

Election commission spokesman Sameeh Maatyah said Prime Minister Samir Rifai called on the Brotherhood in a closed-door meeting Saturday to drop its boycott.
