Kuwait sets vote on political fate of PM

KUWAIT CITY  — Kuwait's parliament speaker says a vote will be held next week that could force the resignation of the prime minister over accusations of using strong-arm tactics against government critics.
Parliament speaker Jassem al-Khorafi set the confidence vote for Jan. 5 on Prime Minister Sheik Nasser Al Mohammed Al Sabah after he was grilled in a closed-door session. Rejecting the premier could open a political crisis in this key Western ally in the Gulf.
The rare parliamentary questioning was called after security forces clashed with opposition lawmakers and their supporters at a Dec. 8 rally.
Opposition lawmakers need a majority of the 50-seat parliament to demand the resignation of the prime minister, who is a nephew of Kuwait's ruler.
