Labor gives boost to Herzog

The Labor Party convention voted Sunday to enable chairman Isaac Herzog to run as the party’s candidate for prime minister in the next general election.
Until the convention, party bylaws had left open the possibility that Herzog would have to face another leadership race ahead of the general election. Herzog succeeded in changing the party constitution.
Prior to the last Labor leadership primary, then-party chairwoman Shelly Yacimovich promised to allow another race before the next general election if she would win.
When Yacimovich made the commitment, it appeared that she could be challenged by former IDF chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi. But he is no longer expected to enter politics in the near future due to the Harpaz affair in which he is implicated.
The convention passed dozens of other amendments that Herzog’s associates said would let him run the party better.
