Makhteshim Agan Industries Ltd. to pay state NIS 1.5 mil. for damages caused by fire

Crop protection manufacturer Makhteshim Agan Industries Ltd. – now called ADAMA Agricultural Solutions – will pay the state NIS 1.5 million for pollution due to a 2009 fire in Ashdod that led to water pollution, the Environmental Protection Ministry announced on Wednesday. A fire at the company's warehouse in the Ashdod port led to the burning of 140 tons of chemicals, including pesticides, the ministry said. The warehouse lacked a proper fire alarm, and materials were stored at a density that constituted a fire hazard, according to the ministry. During firefighting operations, hazardous substances leaked into the Lachish River, the ministry added.
While the company was fined on Wednesday NIS 1.5m., the ministry stressed that following the 2009 events, the firm's environmental performance has significantly improved.
