Medvedev says Russia backs political reform

MOSCOW - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called on Thursday for comprehensive reform of Russia's political system, proposing the direct election of regional governors rather than their appointment by the Kremlin.
In his last state of the nation address to both houses of parliament as president, Medvedev said: "I propose a comprehensive reform of our political system... We need to give all active citizens the legal chance to participate in political life."
He made his statement after the biggest opposition protests in Russia since Vladimir Putin came to power 12 years ago.
