Militant ambush in Pakistan kills 2 Taliban-linked prisoners

The Pakistani military on Saturday said militants ambushed a prison convoy and accidentally killed two aides to a cleric linked to the Taliban in the Swat Valley. According to an army statement, the convoy had been carrying prisoners from Sakhakot town near Swat to Peshawar early Saturday when it was hit by a roadside bomb and gunfire from suspected militants. One soldier and two prisoners were killed. Muhammad Alam and Ameer Izzat were aides to Islamist cleric Sufi Muhammad who negotiated a peace deal with the government that gave the Taliban control of the Swat Valley. But the deal collapsed earlier this year when the Taliban advanced into neighboring districts, triggering a major military offensive.
