PA president requests PLO Constitution Committee convene

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has asked the Palestinian Liberation Organization's Constiution Committee to convene as soon as possible, in Cairo or Amman, to begin drafting ammendments to the PLO's charter, official Palestinian Authority news source WAFA reported Monday.
The Authority's request for constitutional drafting comes alongside plans to push for international recognition in the United Nations for a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.
According to WAFA, Abbas called for a reactivation of the PLO's Constituion Committee as laid out in the Cairo Declaration of 2005, which stated that the organization will include all Palestinian factions, and will be the sole representative of the Palestinian people.
According to the 2005 declaration, members from all Palestinian factions must be represented in the committee, which has not convened since Hamas was elected to power in 2006.
