Palestinian prisoners threaten to strike again

Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails are threatening to renew a hunger strike if Israeli prison authorities do not carry out changes in policy according to their understanding of the agreement which ended their mass strike last month, the Palestinian Authority Minister of Prisoner Affairs said Sunday.
The prisoner affairs minister said the prisoners would launch another open hunger strike unless Israel takes measures to implement the deal.Around 1,600 prisoners joined a mass hunger strike launched on April 17 to demand improvements in prison conditions and an end to certain practices, such as limiting visitation rights, administrative detention and solitary confinement, that Israel had said were sometimes necessary for security reasons.
Representatives of the prisoners agreed to end their hunger strike on May 14 after reaching an agreement regarding some Israeli changes in policy.
After the deal, the minister alleged that Israel had committed not to renew administrative detention for any of the 322 Palestinians currently being held without standard legal process.
