Plane skids off runway in UK's Newcastle airport

LONDON — A passenger plane was evacuated at northern England's Newcastle Airport following reports the aircraft skidded slightly off the runway on Thursday.
Local fire service officers helped about 200 passengers disembark the plane. No injuries were reported.
The BBC reported that the Thomson Fly Boeing 737-800, which arrived from the Canary Islands in Spain, overshot where it should have landed and came to a halt at the end of the runway. The aircraft remained on tarmac.
It said Newcastle Airport had to be closed because of the incident.
It was unclear whether snowy weather contributed to slippery conditions on the runway.
The airport's spokesman did not immediately return calls seeking confirmation.
