A 60-year-old police informant led an investigation that brought the arrest of 25 drug dealers, police announced on Wednesday.
Police said that the agent, a former drug offender, was the central component in the operation, code-named "u-turn". Over the last six months the agent gathered evidence used to bring down the 25 suspects, who police say were major heroin and hashish dealers. A number of the suspects also had a history of property crime offenses, police added.
The investigation was led by the Lachish branch of the YAMAR special investigative unit, which reached out to the agent, an Ashdod resident, knowing that the dealers were familiar with him and he could earn their trust easily.
According to police, the agent, a 60-year-old divorced father of four, took the opportunity because "he believed its never too late to do some good in life."
Commander of the Lachish District, Inspector Yoram Sofer said "there is no doubt the work of this agent will lead to a significant drop in drug dealing and the crimes it leads to."
