Report: GOP candidate Romney to call to arm Syrian rebels

GOP candidate Mitt Romney will call for an escalation of the conflict in Syria by arming rebels to confront president Bashar Assad, The Guardian reported Monday.
Romney is to make the proposal on Monday in a major foreign policy speech, titled "The Mantle of Leadership", in Lexington, Virginia where he intends to lay out his vision, and hopes to draw "great contrast" with that of President Barack Obama - notably on Syria, Libya and Egypt. It will be his 10th address on the topic of foreign policy since summer 2011.
The report quoted an extract of his speech, in which Romney states: "Iran is sending arms to Assad because they know his downfall would be a strategic defeat for them. We should be working no less vigorously with our international partners to support the many Syrians who would deliver that defeat to Iran – rather than sitting on the sidelines."
Romney is also intending to promise to "recommit" to helping form a democratic Palestinian state alongside Israel, NBC news reported.
"In this old conflict, as in every challenge we face in the Middle East, only a new President will bring the chance to begin anew," say Romney’s prepared remarks.
