Trial of former Olmert aide Shula Zaken opens in Jerusalem

The trial of former prime minister Ehud Olmert's aide, Shula Zaken, opened in the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court Wednesday morning. Zaken, Olmert's former bureau chief, is accused of abusing her position in order to advance her brother's business. She allegedly instructed then-Tax Authority head Jackie Matza to force all candidates for deputy head of the authority be screened by her brother, businessman Yoram Karashi. She threatened Matza that if he didn't do so, she would not allow him to meet Olmert, which would further delay nominations in the Tax Authority. Zaken said at the beginning of her trial that she hoped the court will affect justice, and expressed confidence that "truth will see the light of day."
