UN urges Iraq to delay closure of Iranian camp

UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations on Tuesday appealed to Baghdad to delay its planned closure of a camp of Iranian dissidents in Iraq and urged both the Iraqi government and the camp's residents to avoid violence.

"Clearly, the situation cannot be fully resolved before the 31st of December," UN special envoy for Iraq Martin Kobler told the 15-nation Security Council.

"I therefore appeal to the government of Iraq to extend this deadline in order to permit adequate time and space for a solution to be found," he said. "This would also hopefully lower the existing tensions."

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his latest report on Iraq that he has been urging countries to accept the more than 3,000 residents of Camp Ashraf for resettlement. All of them are Iranian citizens but many fear torture or execution if sent back to Iran.
