US ambassador to the UN: Statehood vote is 'unfortunate'

US Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said the successful Palestinian bid to obtain non-member observer status in the UN General Assembly is "unfortunate," speaking minutes after the world body voted overwhelmingly in support of the initiative.
Calling for a resumption of peace talks, Rice said the move at the UN does not "create a state where non indeed exists or change the reality on the ground."
Saying the United States will continue to oppose resolutions and diplomatic moves that harm the State of Israel, she added, "this vote should not be misconstrued as eligibility for UN membership," and does not establish a Palestinian state.
Rice called for renewed negotiations, saying that ultimately, "it is the Palestinians and the Israelis who must talk to each other, listen to each other and find a way to live side by side in the land they share."
