We’re sure that your Instagram and TikTok feeds have also exploded over the past two weeks with the Japanese cheesecake trend. At first, we were quite skeptical – how does a combination of just two ingredients turn into a cheesecake? But after we tried it, we have to admit: It works! This is an extremely easy-to-make cheesecake, tasty, photogenic, and packed with protein.
The cake is made of only two ingredients: Yogurt and biscuits.
The preparation method couldn’t be simpler – open a container of yogurt, put a few biscuits inside, cover it, and leave it overnight in the refrigerator.
So how does it become so tasty? The yogurt moistens and softens the biscuits; after a few hours they absorb liquid and the texture becomes soft and creamy, to the point that it really resembles cheesecake or tiramisu.
Users from around the world are sharing their own versions of the trend – you can find a variety of combinations of flavored yogurts, different types of cookies, and toppings of fruits or sauces on top. It seems that everyone is trying to find the perfect version.
So is the recipe really suitable for those who are on a diet or trying to maintain their weight? We went to check how many calories are in this treat.
Yogurt 200 grams
Protein yogurt
An average yogurt (1–1.5% fat, 20–24 grams of protein) contains on average 120–190 calories per container.
The values for plain-flavored yogurt are usually at the lower end of the range, while yogurts in various flavors such as coffee or fruit are usually at the higher end.
Greek yogurt
Standard yogurt (3–5% fat) contains on average 150–200 calories per container (11–15 grams of protein).
High-fat yogurt
Yogurt containing 10% fat contains on average 300–330 calories per container (6–8 grams of protein).
As easy as it gets
The most important thing is the cookie
Lotus cookie
38 calories (114 calories for 3 cookies)
Oreo cookie
52 calories (156 calories for 3 cookies)
Average biscuit
35 calories (105 calories for 3 cookies)
Note that even in the sugar-free biscuit version, the biscuit still provides a similar calorie level to a regular biscuit because the calories come mainly from fat and other carbohydrates.
And this time in the Oreo version
Let’s summarize
A cheesecake in the most protein-rich and diet-friendly version, made of protein yogurt and 3 regular biscuits – will contain 225–295 calories.
A cheesecake in a slightly richer version, made of Greek yogurt and 3 Lotus cookies – will contain 264–314 calories.
And in the indulgent version of the trend – high-fat yogurt and 3 Oreo cookies – the cake will contain 456–486 calories.
Against these figures, let’s remember that a slice of regular baked cheesecake contains 250–400 calories. So while the viral cake is very simple to prepare, is it really more diet-friendly? That already depends on how you make it.
