An American soldier was shot to death in an attack in southern Baghdad, the military said Friday. Another soldier died of wounds suffered during an attack the day before.

A US statement said the Multi-National Division-Baghdad soldier was killed Thursday. The second soldier died Friday after a foot patrol was targeted by a roadside bomb south of Baghdad on Thursday, the military said.

The statements said the soldiers' names would not be released until families could be notified.

At least 3,891 members of the US military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes eight military civilians. At least 3,169 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.
