100-year-old Turkish grenade found in Jerusalem city wall

A one hundred-year-old Turkish hand grenade was found embedded in the Jerusalem city wall Wednesday during conservation work near the Damascus Gate.

Police sappers were summoned to the site after a fist-sized chunk of metal was found in the wall. The object was identified to be a Turkish hand grenade dating back to the Ottoman period, holding 200-300 grams of explosives. The sappers removed and detonated the grenade.

"The stone was partially crushed, and someone probably chose it as a place to hide a hand grenade," suggested Yoram Saad, Head of the Implementations Branch of the Israel Antiquities Authority Conservation Department, which helped with the conservation work.
