Human rights group Sikkuy slams gov't appointment of Vilnai

Lawyers Ali Haider and Ron Gerlitz, joint CEOs of the organization Sikkuy, The Association for the Advancement of Civic Equality in Israel, stressed their issues Tuesday with the government's decision to appoint Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai to the position of Minority Affairs Minister.

The two stated that there is no need for the Vilnai to handle minority affairs solo, and that issues surrounded the country's Arab population should be handled by the entire government in partnership with the Arab leadership.

"The appointment of the [Vilnai] to Minorty Affairs in the Defense Ministry is an even more unfortunate decision, and has the potential to cause damage to the status of Arabic citizens and Jewish-Arab relations. The government must treat Arab citizens as equals, and not as an issue of defense," Heidar and Gerlitz said.
