Putin criticizes US diplomats for WikiLeaks cables

MOSCOW— Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Thursday questioned the reliability of US diplomats whose cables refer to Russia as undemocratic and plagued by corruption.
Putin also said Thursday that the fact that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is in British custody shows that the West has its own problems with democracy.
During a televised news conference, Putin asked, "You think that the US diplomatic service is a crystal clear source of information? Do you really think so?"
"Why was Mr. Assange hidden in prison?" Putin asked. "Is this democracy?" He then used a Russian saying that equates to "the pot calling the kettle black," in reference to criticism from the West.
