Report: Hackers target Japan lower house lawmakers

TOKYO - Hackers have targeted the computer network used by Japan's lower house of parliament since July by using a computer virus to steal passwords and may have been able to read lawmakers' e-mails for a month, the Asahi newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The hacking follows a similar attack on Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd , Japan's biggest defense contractor, which has increased pressure on the government to bolster cyber security.

Hackers sent the virus by e-mail at the end of July and may have been targeting information related to Japan's foreign and defense policies, the newspaper said, citing a person familiar with the matter who it did not name.

The first lawmaker's computer that was infected by the virus connected to servers in China, but it is difficult to determine who placed the program on the Chinese server as anyone could have accessed it, the Asahi said.
