Soldiers complaints report: Commanders cover up incidents

Noting an increase in complaints filed by IDF soldiers against their commanders in 2010, military Ombudsman Brig. Gen (res.) Yitzhak Brik presented his annual report on Wednesday to the Knesset and President Shimon Peres.
Of the 6,289 complaints that received by the Ombudsman’s Office, Brik said, 55 per cent were justified, especially those lodged by soldiers against young officers who do not have sufficient experience. Brik noted a drop however in complaints filed by reservists.
Brik brought a number of examples in the report which showed how senior commanders occasionally covered up instances when soldiers’ rights were violated. One example brought was of a lieutenant colonel who knew of a prank done to a junior soldier in his unit but did not stop it and even participated.
