Volcanic ash snarls Scottish, Irish air services

LONDON — A new wave of dense volcanic ash from Iceland has disrupted air traffic in Scotland and Northern Ireland and threatens to spill into the air space of England and the Republic of Ireland too.

Britain's Civil Aviation Authority grounded flights at most airports in Scotland and Northern Ireland from 7 a.m. (0600GMT) Wednesday. However, services from the two regions' capitals, Edinburgh and Belfast, remained open.

The Irish Aviation Authority warned that most airports in the Republic of Ireland would suffer shutdowns later Wednesday lasting several hours each. The key Irish hub, Dublin, was scheduled to shut at 1 p.m. (1200GMT) and reopen in the evening.

British authorities said Wednesday's ash threat might reach northwestern England and Wales but would miss London.
