A 31-year-old married father was arrested on Sunday night on suspicion of violently raping a 21-year-old woman in a Karmiel park.
Police said they met on an dating Web site, and that the suspect, Amitai Ashtamker, introduced himself online as a 25-year-old man named “Idan” from Kiryat Shmona.
Ashtamker has past convictions for violent crimes and drugs, and was previously investigated over allegations of sexual offenses, police said.
After agreeing to meet at the park on Sunday night, the two began drinking vodka. Things turned violent after the woman rejected Amshataker’s sexual advances, police said. The suspect pulled her hair and smashed her head against a park table, police said.
“He stripped and raped her,” a police spokesman said.
Following the attack, the woman attempted to get away, but the suspect grabbed a glass bottle and threatened to slash her face, the spokesman added.
At this stage, police volunteers on patrol in the park spotted the suspect and the woman. Naked, she ran toward them pleading for help.
The volunteers called for backup and took the suspect into custody.
The Acre Magistrate’s Court extended his custody by a week on Monday.
