French defense minister regrets Afghan civilian killings

French Defense Minister Herver Morin on Friday expressed deep regret over the killing of four Afghan civilians in a French military operation, while defending the soldiers responsible.
Morin said the killings east of Kabul resulted from an unfortunate convergence of events, and that "I absolutely do not want us to consider our soldiers at fault."
He told France Inter radio that he had written a letter to Afghan President Hamid Karzai expressing condolences and said "it's an accident I deeply regret."
The French military announced Thursday that embattled troops mistakenly killed four Afghan civilians and seriously wounded one during the April 6 clash in the strategic Tagab Valley.
