J'lem municipality, Moriah announce highway extension plan

The Jerusalem municipality and the semi-public Moriah company announced a major highway extension plan to Begin highway on Tuesday.
The NIS 400 million project will lengthen Begin by 12 kilometers on the south end, providing a 3-lane access road from Route 60 to Begin with no traffic lights, in an attempt to ease traffic congestion coming from the south into the city.
The road will include five bridges and three tunnels. The expansion is part of the city's vision to expand southwest Jerusalem, near Teddy Stadium, into a commercial center, including a sports center with Olympic pool.
The extension on the north side will connect the Kiryat Moshe neighborhood to Begin with a three-lane road (expanded from two lanes) whose construction may begin as soon as next month.
