Keshev C'tee slams 'populist' Yisrael Beytenu

The Keshev Committee on Thursday slammed Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman's Yisrael Beytenu party as "populist" for its decision to leave the committee, which it faulted for not recommending mandatory national service for all Israeli-Arab 18-year-olds.

"This was a populist move by a party that knows how to preach about equality in the burden but has no intention of initiating serious steps toward that end," the committee said in a statement.

The committee added that it had adopted the principle of service for everyone as a national goal and was working to integrate tens of thousands of Israeli citizens into national service. The statement charged Yisrael Beytenu with "inciting," rather than taking part in this effort.

""It's a shame that political interests win out at the expense of taking responsibility and make it more difficult to take advantage of this historical opportunity to to apply a comprehensive and balanced solution that will bring about serious change," the committee added.
