Knesset committee to discuss proposed conversion bill

The Knesset Committee is set to discuss on Wednesday a proposed conversion bill put forward by Knesset Law Committee Chairman David Rotem (Israel Beiteinu), due for a preliminary vote. According to the proposed bill, the Conversion Authority under the auspices of the Chief Rabbinate will have the power to authorize local rabbis to establish conversion courts. The bill would empower every city rabbi to register converts regardless of their place of residence. The bill would also make it near impossible to cancel conversions and this would only be permitted in the court in which the conversion took place. MK Yuli Tamir (Labor) criticized the proposal saying that the Chief Rabbinate in this case would be granted absolute power on the conversion issue and would toughen requirements for conversion.
