Livni: Israel should not release Barghouti

Opposition leader Tzipi Livni voiced her strong opposition on Wednesday to the release of jailed Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, whose election this week to the Palestinian faction's powerful Central Committee spurned growing calls within Israel for his freedom. "Marwan Barghouti was put on trial in a court in Israel, and was sentenced to many years in prison," she said during an interview with Army Radio. "He murdered and was convicted of murder." "The fact that the Palestinian public chose him to lead Fatah, or that some of us think that he might be a better partner than others, that does not justify in my eyes his release from jail given the crimes he committed," Livni said.
