Municipal Election Day will be a vacation day, according to an initiative by Interior Minister Gideon Sa'ar approved by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation Sunday.Sa'ar proposed the vacation day in light of low voter turnout rates in October's municipal election, in which less than half of those eligible went to the polls."Over many years, there was a vacation day for municipal elections. I believe that citizens' participation in democracy is an important value and that local elections are no less important than Knesset elections. Therefore, we can make it easier for Israeli citizens to exercise their democratic right," Sa'ar said.
