Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Lebanese President Michel Suleiman may participate in the landmark meeting between Saudi King Abdullah and Syrian President Bashar Assad, Syrian news agency Al-Arabia reported on Tuesday. Suleiman's presence at the summit may advance efforts to establish a new government in Beirut, after parliamentary elections held in June 2009 resulted in yet more contention between the country's two main rival political factions. A solution to Lebanon's ongoing predicament may also improve relations between Damascus and Riyadh, which had been tense since the widely disputed murder of Western-backed former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri in February 2005. In the years following the incident, Saudi Arabia backed the 14 March bloc headed by Hariri's son Sa'ad, while Syria offered military and political support to rival faction Hizbullah. Preparations are well underway for the landmark meeting, which is scheduled to take place later this week.
