National service instead of IDF service for youth offenders

A project for first-time youth offenders to participate in national service (volunteering) in place of regular army service was established by a collaboration of organizations last weekend. The program is meant for youth offenders who have received an army service exemption due to a criminal record, and is meant for youth offenders once they have completed their prison time. The group that created the program consisted of the Prisoner Rehabilitation Authority, the Association for Volunteering and National Service, the Ofek Youth Prison head, and director of the Crimes Prevention Department.

The youths will volunteer for between a year to two years, in a variety of roles that will be designated according to the abilities and strengths of the youth. Jobs include working with animals, working within the health arena, and environmental protection. The volunteer work is meant to be a part of the rehabilitation process for the young offenders.
