Netanyahu says Jews should be included in loyalty oath

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday instructed Justice Minister Yaakov Neeman to draft a new amendment to the Citizenship Act that will mean Jews who are applying for Israeli citizenship will also have to pledge their allegiance to a "Jewish and democratic Israel" under Law of Return guidelines.

Until now the proposed amendment to the Citizenship Law focused only on non-Jewish applicants for citizenship.

The cabinet last week passed a proposed amendment to the Citizenship Law requiring new citizens, who do not fall under the Law of Return, to swear their loyalty to Israel as a "Jewish and democratic state."
