Peres discusses Israeli economy with OECD chief in J'lem

OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria began an intense day of meetings on Sunday by calling on President Shimon Peres, who congratulated him on his third term as secretary-general and thanked him profusely for his efforts in enabling Israel's membership in the OECD.

Gurria told Peres that Israel's economic growth of 4 percent was among the highest of OECD members, and her rate of unemployment among the lowest.

However, there was still a need to integrate the haredi and Arab sectors of the population into mainstream society and the economy, he noted.

Gurria lauded Israel's technology and flexibility, declaring Israel to be among the world leaders in scientific and technological developments. Though proud of what Israel has already achieved, Peres said he is not yet satisfied, and told his guest that one of the country's key priorities was to make higher education accessible to all sectors, and to introduce more technological subjects into school curricula to stimulate and challenge young minds.
