Report: Turkey rejects EU rebuke for violent crackdown on dissent

Turkey on Saturday dismissed recent criticism by the EU for violence used over the summer in crackdowns on protesters, AFP reported.
The European Commission's annual progress report on aspiring EU members slammed Ankara for its "uncompromising stance in the face of dissent" and the "excessive force" used by police against demonstrators during anti-government protests that began in June."We consider it highly important to emphasize that actions disrupting the peace in our country through recourse to violence and illegal methods can never be seen as a means to claim one's rights," AFP quoted Turkish EU Affairs Minister Egemen Bagis as saying, adding that membership talks with the bloc had stalled "due to the attitudes of some member states".
