Spain to consider banning burkas in public

Spain's leading opposition party says the country's parliament is to debate barring the use of burkas in public, joining other European countries considering similar moves on the grounds that such garments are degrading to women.
A spokeswoman for the Popular Party said they have tabled a motion to debate total body-covering Islamic veils in the lower house on Tuesday or Wednesday.
She spoke Sunday on condition of anonymity in keeping with party rules.
The Spanish government favors barring the use of burkas in government buildings, Justice Minister Francisco Caamano has said.
Several European countries have been debating regulating the use of body-covering burkas or face-covering nikabs, including Belgium, the Netherlands and France.
