UK halts export of lethal injection drug used in US

LONDON — The British government has issued an order to control the export of a sedative used to execute death-row prisoners in the US.
Secretary of State of Business and Innovation Vince Cable has approved the order forcing companies to be licensed to export sodium thiopental, the first of three drugs given to prisoners in lethal injections in the US.
Exporters are required to prove drugs will be used for legitimate medical reasons, not execution.
London-based rights group Reprieve filed suit. The group said a 56-year-old prisoner is set to be executed in January in Tennessee using drugs exported from Britain.
