US condemns approval of new east J'lem homes

WASHINGTON — The White House's top spokesman on Tuesday said the United States condemns Israel's approval of 1,600 new homes in east Jerusalem.
Robert Gibbs on Tuesday told reporters that US Vice President Joe Biden, visiting Israel, would issue a detailed statement shortly. US President Barack Obama's position on the settlements is known by both the Israelis and the Palestinians, Gibbs added.
The White House statement came hours after the Interior Ministry approved the construction of 1,600 new housing units for young haredi families in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo on Tuesday.
